Open Mic Performance Benefit & Pot Luck BBQ

Q. What? When? Where? Why?
A. It's sort of like a party, except not. See details below. Sunday, June 5th. Arrive between 2-3 for food, performances start at 4 and go until 8ish. Autumn (Saint Mae) & Chris' place.

Q. Why?
A.
Rowan is a really smart kid. At 16, he goes to High Tech High and takes math classes at a local community college. He dreams of someday solving the cold fusion enigma. He has a passionate love for psychology. He's also super cool. He reminds me of my friends when I was his age, in the best way possible.

Rowan needs your help. He has an amazing opportunity this summer - to attend Stanford's highschool summer program, taking actual Stanford summer classes and living in the dorms with other highschool students from around the country. Unfortunately, Stanford is only able to offer a small scholarship for this summer program, and this is leaving Rowan with a large sum to come up with. His family is doing their part to pay for this, but they can use all the help they can get. That's where you come in.

Q. Open Mic? Performances? Benefit?
A.
My friends are amazing and talented individuals. They can sing, dance, paint, draw, tell stories, play instruments. I wanted to find some way to help Rowan and also have a good time, and this is it.

Starting at 4pm, we'll have performances in the living room. If you'd like to sing, dance, tell a story, play an instrument, read your poetry, read someone else's poetry, perform a skit, or engage in any other art form that's fun to watch, please email me at autumn@discordian.com and tell me what timeslot you'd like. Timeslots are set at 15 minutes for convinience. If you think you'll use less than half the time, please let me know. If you have a band and would like a slightly longer timeslot, just sign up for two in a row. Feel free to sign up for more than one timeslot. Schedule will be posted as signups occur, first come first serve.

If you're an artist, you are welcome to bring things to sell. Please donate a small portion of your sales to the benefit fund, though.

Artist Kate Reed will be painting any object you'd like to bring her, for a small donation. Bring a shell, stone, saw blade, hat, some old clothes or photos - and Kate will paint it for you. She'll take suggestions on what to paint, but she's an artist, and you know how those artistic types are about following directions....

Where does the benefit part come in? That's all on you. Suggested donation is $3-20 for performers, $5-20 for students and the broke, $10-?? for people who can spare the cash. No one turned away for lack of funds, but you all can afford a few bucks, right?

Q. Potluck? BBQ?
A.
From 2-4, the house will be open and the grill will be hot. Please bring enough food to feed yourself, and some to share if you're able. We have some vegetarian friends, but we also like MEAT, so bring whatever sounds tasty, just make sure to label it so no one eats something they find offensive.

Q. What should I bring?
A.
Alcohol, non-alcoholic beverages, food. (Bringing something is appreciated, but not mandatory.)

Food has been explained above.

We have a lot of hard alcohol from our parties, but if you'd like beer or cider or wine coolers or similar, please bring some. Note, there will be a few teenagers at this party. Please do not feed them alcohol. We feel we can trust them well enough that they won't go stealing swigs of vodka, but please don't tempt them.

For non-alcoholic drinks, please bring something tasty for the mixer section. We normally provide a few basics like coke, ginger ale, and orange juice, but special things like elderflower presse and redbull are really appreciated, as are tropical juices and other similarly tasty and nonstandard things. For that matter, we've run out of mixers before, so even standard sodas would be appreciated.

Please extend this invitation to your significant other(s). Feel free to invite anyone you think would enjoy the performance and company, but please email Autumn first just so she knows who all will be attending.

Q. How do I get there?
A.
Mapquest is a wonderful tool, but it tends to get people lost when attempting to find my place, so use these directions instead.

Unfortunately, it's not easy to get to our place via public transportation. The closest bus route is probably a 30 minute walk away. If you are unable to get a ride, you can take the train to the Redwood City station and call and we can have someone pick you up from there. If you need to do this, though, please come early so there will be someone sober enough to drive.

From the east bay:
You can take the bay bridge to 101 if you're up north. Anywhere further south, take either 92 to 101 or 280 (go south to reach us), or 84 to 101 (go north to reach us).

From 280:
From wherever you are, take 280 twords Redwood City. That's South from San Francisco and North from San Jose.
Take the Farm Hill Blvd exit. There's only really one way to turn from the offramp, so do that. Lose points if you end up in the ditch by the side of the road.
Pass one stop light at Ca~ada College.
At the first stop sign, turn left on Emerald Hills Road.
Follow directions from Emerald Hills Road, below.

From 101:
From wherever you are, take 101 twords Redwood City. That's South from San Francisco and North from San Jose.
Take the Woodside/Seaport exit, and take Woodside.
Follow Woodside up through a whole bunch of lights until you're on an overpass, take El Camino (82) north. (Note on getting back home - when you're trying to do these directions in reverse, you'll want to take Woodside east to get back to the freeway.)
Turn left on Jefferson at the light. If you pass Safeway, you've gone too far.
Jefferson winds up and turns into Farm Hill Blvd. This is 5-10 minutes, if you think you've missed your turn, you probably haven't. If you hit 280, you have.
At the stop sign, turn right on Emerald Hills Road.
Follow directions from Emerald Hills Road, below.

From Emerald Hills Road:
At the first stop sign, Emerald Hills T's off into another street. Turn left onto Jefferson.
Jefferson winds around and turns into Lakeview. At the first stop sign, make your immediate right onto Eastlake. It's a weird 5-way intersection.
Follow Eastlake around and down until it T's off into Hamilton Way. Our driveway is right across from where Eastlake ends. Park as soon as possible, but make sure not to park in an area that blocks the road.

The address is 3742 Hamilton Way, and the phone number is 650-274-7827 in case you get lost.

PLEASE don't drink and drive. If you want to drink a lot, please make sure you have someone with you designated. I should hope I don't need to say this to most of you, but it's super not cool and I don't approve in any way whatsoever. (Also, another thing that's not cool is getting drunk-sick. Just because it's my place doesn't mean I'm looking forward to the cleanup job.)

NOTE: We have three cats. They will be safely locked in a bedroom during the gathing, but if you are allergic, you should take drugs and hang out on the back deck a lot.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
